How Can I Commemorate Black History Month?
Since 1976, Black History Month in the U.S. has given all Americans an opportunity to learn about and celebrate the contributions of Black Americans throughout history. During the month of February, everyone is encouraged even more to explore Black history and Black culture. But how do you commemorate Black History Month? We’ve put together a handy guide to make the most of the month.
Have some fun and explore Black entertainment! You can choose to focus on documentaries and historically relevant films and TV or seek out contemporary options with Black writers, producers, and actors. Some streaming providers even have Black History sections to help you make a selection.
Discover a Black-owned business or shop at an old favorite. When you choose to spend money at a Black-owned establishment, you support growth and advancement for the community.
No matter what genre of literature you enjoy, you’re sure to find work by Black authors to add to your shelf. You can pick up a novel, try out an audiobook, or choose a work of nonfiction to explore.
Take a fun history lesson by visiting a Black history museum! You may find African American History museums, Civil Rights museums, or other options near you. During the pandemic, many museums are offering virtual tours and taking safety precautions for in-person visits.
Diversify your social media feed and use your own platform to amplify Black content creators. You don’t need to have a massive following to make an impact. Follow Black creators in your favorite industry and share their work on your feed, in Stories on Instagram or Facebook, or with your family and friends.
Black nonprofit organizations fight for progress on issues that impact the Black community. You can research some organizations and find one that aligns with your values. Join their email list to stay up-to-date on their work and, if you’re able, consider making a donation.
Black music ranges across many genres and eras. Revisit Black artists you love or find someone new– it’s up to you! Try watching a biopic on a popular musician, buy an album or a single song if you can, or just stream an artist on your list.
There are some names that feature prominently during Black History Month, and for good reason. Consider expanding your knowledge by learning about an unsung Black hero. You can start your research online or by visiting your local library.
Black artists, poets, content creators, and creators of handmade goods benefit from your support. Consider making a purchase if you can, but if you can’t, spread the word with your friends and family! Share a Black creative’s work on social media or forward a newsletter to someone who would enjoy it.
You may know about Black History Month, but how much do you really know? Have some fun by researching historical facts about this month-long celebration, including who started the tradition, why we celebrate in February, and more. It’s a great way to expand your knowledge and add to any Black History conversation you may have.
