Holiday parties with friends and loved ones are one of the most enjoyable parts of the season, but they can put pressure on both your cooking skills and your budget. But you don’t have to be a Food Network junkie or spend a fortune on pre-made appetizer trays to impress your fellow partygoers. These simple yet elegant cheese straws compliment any table and can even be given as a hostess gift. And with just five ingredients, they are a quick and affordable choice as well.
- Two sheets (one box) puff pastry
- One egg
- Grated cheese (such as parmesan, gruyere or pecorino)
- Fresh or dried thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Roll out the puff pastry into large squares. Beat the egg with a tablespoon of water, and then brush the egg onto the pastry. Sprinkle cheese across the pastry, followed by the thyme, salt and pepper. Cut each square into long, even strips. Twist each strip and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes, flipping the straws over halfway through the cooking time. Serve the straws at room temperature, on a platter or standing up in pretty jar.
